The Ultimate Self-Defense Combo

When it comes to home defense, it’s best not to take any chances. That includes the defense of the home and the person. So what’s the best self-defense combination for comprehensive protection? That includes a long gun for protecting the home, an everyday carry (EDC), and a concealed carry or backup gun (BUG).

Long Gun for Home Defense

An article could be written (and many of them have been) on whether a rifle, handgun, or shotgun is the superior firearm for home defense. Excellent arguments can be made for all of them. However, for top-tier home defense, cartridge capacity, precision aiming, and stopping power, it’s hard to beat a rifle. And among rifles, it’s hard to beat those chambered for .223 Remington (the civilian permutation of the 5.56 NATO round), primarily the AR-15 platform.

One of the primary concerns cited regarding the .223 Remington as a home defense option is over-penetration. It’s a legitimate concern as the .223 Remington, like the military 5.56 variant, is a relatively small, narrow round with a lot of powder behind it. It turns out that the risk of over-penetration from .223 556 ammo is actually around the same as or even less than, handgun and shotgun loads. Still, using split-core, Glaser safety round, frangible cartridges, or hollow point or soft point ammo for safety’s sake isn’t a bad idea.

The Everyday Carry

If there’s one debate that’s even more intense than “rifle, shotgun, or handgun for home defense,” it’s “9mm or .45 ACP?” Proponents of the 9mm make the excellent point that newer 9mm cartridges feature hotter tactical loads and more effective rounds than the nine of yesteryear, making their stopping power equal to, or even superior to, .45 ACP ammo. You’ll find no argument here.

In some situations, the fact that 9mm rounds can have superior penetration is the point. A pistol chambered for .45 ACP throws broad, heavy, slow bullets that transfer their velocity to the thing they hit, and can, therefore, be less of an over-penetration risk than the 9mm. Not to mention, in states that ban standard high-capacity pistol mags and where hollow-points aren’t easily obtainable, having only seven or eight rounds requires that each have some kick.

The Concealed Carry/BUG

If you have a concealed carry (CC) permit or are just looking for a competent backup, there’s not exactly a shortage of options. The recent trend of compacting and sub compacting handguns has produced a wealth of modern pocket pistols. Among the best of them is an underrated classic: the .380 ACP. Like the .45 ACP, .380 ACP ammo has been successfully doing the trick for over a century.

Because they’re an older caliber, pistols chambered .380 ACP (and the ammo itself) are often relatively inexpensive. And if you’ve got a flair for the antique, you can find beautiful .380 pistols a century old or more for a few hundred bucks. On top of which, they are virtually always very concealable, have very modest recoil, and high-capacity.
